How We Restored a 12-Year-Old Designer Bag

? The Restoration Process

1. Refreshed the Handles

The leather handles had developed deep darkening and dryness. We:

  • Gently cleaned the vachetta leather with a pH-balanced solution.

  • Applied leather balm to restore natural oils and patina.

  • Carefully buffed out surface cracks to renew suppleness.

2. Cleaned and Conditioned the Leather

The leather trimmings and piping had accumulated dirt and lost their luster. Our steps included:

  • Degreasing and lifting embedded grime.

  • Reconditioning the leather with high-quality cream to restore softness and shine.

3. Polished the Hardware

The brass zipper and rivets had dulled and oxidized. We:

  • Removed oxidation and buildup with non-abrasive metal polish.

  • Buffed the brass until it regained a warm, golden sheen.

4. Revitalized the Canvas Exterior

While durable, the coated canvas had signs of wear. We:

  • Deep cleaned the surface with a canvas-safe cleanser.

  • Touched up faded corners and gently restored the pattern clarity.

  • Sealed the canvas for protection from future stains and UV fading.
